Seven Years Later: Reclaiming My Dev Haven

This was hands down the most thorough cleanup I’ve done since I moved here in late 2018, and finally, I’ve found the time to set up what feels like my first real game dev office. Before this, my office was squeezed into my bedroom, while the room that was supposed to be my main dev space sat in total chaos, basically a junk room, for seven years.

Why didn’t I do it sooner?

Well, before landing in this current home, I went through two “dream” condo-style places, each with a big garage for storage (something I don’t have anymore). Both were brand new, but had serious air quality issues. And I’m not exaggerating; it nearly killed me. It did kill my chipmunk, He’Ke. That’s a long story for another time, maybe, but the short version is: new homes aren’t always built with your health in mind. A lot of chemicals, poor airflow, and for people like me who are super sensitive, it’s a nightmare.

Then, by pure luck, I found this current place, a few towns away from where I grew up.

In 2019, my childhood best friend moved in with me for a year because he was going through a rough time. I couldn’t just leave him hanging. He slept in what was meant to be my office. His stay ended up feeling endless, until I realized he wasn’t exactly in a rush to move out. I had to actively hunt for places for him. Eventually, he did move, but he left his cat with me, and she stayed until she passed away in 2023. I’m not even a cat person, but she really grew on me. That second room basically became hers, mostly taken over by her litter and stuff.

Then came the pandemic, then the ongoing economic mess, then the food delivery madness. No time to breathe, let alone turn this place into the dev space it was meant to be.

And that’s the irony! This place really is a game dev haven, the very dream I was chasing ten years ago. But life, money, and bad timing drained the momentum. I was sitting in the promised land all along, but couldn’t capitalize on it. Hopefully, it looks like things might finally be moving in the right direction now.

So here I am. After about ten days of non-stop organizing, I’ve turned what used to be a cluttered storage room into the official Blossomsoft Games HQ.

What difference does that make?

It was never really an issue during the colder months, but during the hot season, it became a real problem. Back when my office was crammed into my bedroom, it had to share the same AC. That room gets freezing, which is perfect for sleeping through a heatwave without insomnia, but absolutely awful for working at a PC. The moment I tried dialing the AC down even a little, the outside heat would flood in and cancel it out. So, I had to keep it blasting at full power 24/7. Definitely not ideal. At one point, I even tried using a heater alongside the AC just to find some middle ground… but all it did was trip the fuses.

Now that I’ve moved my dev space into the neighboring room, the AC cools it just enough to stay comfortable, while my bedroom stays nice and chilly, perfect for nap time under a thick blanket.

Hoping I can use the rest of July and all of August to get back into game dev, even with the summer heat in full swing.
