The following blog post acts like a diary and carries the personal thoughts of Elder Prince, founder of Blossomsoft Games.
To put it simply, a big financial debt has prevented me from focusing on game development since around the lockdown in 2020. The insane monthly fees, penalties for lateness, soaring inflation, and low revenue have made my situation feel pretty hopeless.
I wish I could say I’ve been spending tons of hours on game development, but that hasn’t been the case these past few years. My sincere attempt to release the Mandela Edition in December 2023 (yet a very simple and easy goal) was derailed by debts right before I could deliver the game. It’s a real knife in the wound because I know I could make it happen and the result was amazing. But it was either release the game on time or end up homeless the next month. I’m still fighting every month to keep a roof over my head.
For now, my only way of earning income is through food delivery with apps like DoorDash and UberEats. When I started, the pay was great, usually around $20 per hour. But in recent months, it’s been unpredictable, often dropping to $10 per hour.
I stick with this side gig because I can work on creative stuff in my car during the wait time, and writing stories fits in perfectly. However, working on a smartphone isn’t as productive as working on a PC, but at least it allows me to stay connected to my projects while side hustling.
Right now, I’m working hard to turn things around, but it’s easier said than done. A friend in Russia has been helping me, and we might come up with a strategy to reduce my debt significantly if he stays motivated to help me despite my setbacks.
Before my financial troubles, I was making headway in creating the framework and mechanics for my game. I was super confident in where my projects were headed; success seemed inevitable to me. But now, my projects feel doomed because I hardly ever get to sit down at my computer.
Once my life is back to normal, I promise to dedicate 15 hours a day to game development, just like I used to.
That’s pretty much the gist of it.
BIG UPDATE: Game development is officially resuming! The harsh situation I went through was resolved in the last week of July 2024. Read more about this turning point [here].
